Shopify is cheaper to start. A custom store costs more on day one, but has no platform rent and no fee on every order. Here's what each really costs over 3 years.

With these numbers, the custom store costs less overall from month 13.
How this is worked out: Shopify Basic plan on yearly billing plus 18% GST, our ₹30,000 Shopify build, about₹2,000 a month for apps, and Shopify's 2% fee on prepaid orders (cash on delivery has no fee). Custom: the ₹1,00,000 build and ₹2,500 a month for the server. Payment-gateway fees (about 2%) are the same on both, so they're left out. Shopify prices checked November 2026. This is a guide, not a quote. Shopify is the right choice for many shops, and I build those too.
